On this past Saturday, I had the privilege of speaking at the FAFO Festival here in Louisville. It was a beautiful afternoon of live music, and many neighbors had been there since noon. I'm grateful to my fellow JCTA leader, the chair of Indivisible Louisville, for introducing me and for reminding everyone that the work matters more than the title.

I teach math at Breckinridge Metropolitan High School, a school for students facing behavioral struggles. Many of my students live in District 3. They need mentors and job training in the neighborhoods where they live, not only inside school walls. Investing in young people is investing in the future of District 3.

Families here also need fresh food. The Kroger at Southland Terrace closed ten years ago, and too many neighbors still don't have a grocery store close to home. No family should struggle to find fresh, affordable food in their own neighborhood.

People also need to be able to stay in their homes. In 2023, I worked with tenant organizers to pass an anti-displacement ordinance. It gives residents a voice when Metro money pays for development in their neighborhoods. Our government shouldn't spend money pricing us out of our homes. It shouldn't put data centers in communities that never asked for them either. Clean air, clean land and clean water are part of the pursuit of happiness.

Shirley Chisholm said it best: I'm never bought and I'm never bossed. I don't go along to get along, and I'll keep showing up for the people of District 3.

This November, your vote is your voice. Tell your family and friends in District 3 to vote Kumar Rashad for Metro Council. Watch Full Speech [Video]
